UN-REDD+
REDD+ stands for “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, Plus Conservation, Sustainable Forest Management, and Enhancement of Forest Carbon Stocks.” It is a framework for climate change mitigation efforts, particularly in the context of reducing carbon emissions from activities related to deforestation and forest degradation.
The concept of REDD+ emerged as a response to the recognition that deforestation and forest degradation are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2). When forests are cleared or degraded, the carbon stored in trees and vegetation is released into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming and climate change.
The main objectives of REDD+ are twofold:
To Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
This involves implementing strategies and measures to halt or decrease deforestation and forest degradation. By protecting existing forests, it is possible to prevent further carbon emissions from being released into the atmosphere.
To Enhance Carbon Stocks and Promote Sustainable Forest Management
This component focuses on conservation and sustainable forest management practices that increase carbon sequestration and storage in forests. This may include afforestation (planting new forests) or reforestation (restoring previously deforested areas with new trees).
Under the REDD+ framework, countries or regions that successfully reduce deforestation and forest degradation or implement sustainable forest management practices can earn carbon credits. These carbon credits are known as “REDD+ credits” or “forest carbon credits.” They represent a quantifiable unit of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) that has been prevented from entering the atmosphere due to forest conservation and enhancement activities.
REDD+ projects can play a crucial role in climate change mitigation by providing financial incentives to countries and communities to protect their forests and adopt sustainable land use practices. Additionally, REDD+ initiatives can contribute to biodiversity conservation, support local communities, and promote sustainable development.
It’s important to note that while REDD+ projects have the potential to make a significant impact on climate change mitigation, there are challenges related to monitoring, reporting, and verifying emissions reductions accurately. Ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of REDD+ projects requires robust methodologies, transparent accounting, and robust monitoring systems to track emissions reductions and carbon sequestration accurately.
